Notes: Gladys Maud Jones’s name appears on the Welsh book of Remembrance, and her photograph is in the Imperial War Museum’s collection. Unfortunately, despite her name, she appears to have no connection with Wales. Both her parents were from Lincolnshire.

Notes: Gladys (or Gwladys, both spellings occur) worked as a VAD at Danycoed Red Cross Hospital, Swansea, where she contracted the illness that became meningitis. She was 28 when she died, and was well-known in Swansea for swimming in the ladies’ water polo team.

Ellen ‘Nellie’ Mariana Booker

Notes: Nellie Booker was the sixth daughter of Caroline Booker [qv]. With her mother and sister Etta [qv] she established the Southerndown branch of the Red Cross Society. At the outbreak of war she was the Secretary of the Tuscar House Hospital, and later became its Commandant. Unusually she was given a military funeral: ‘a unique honour for a lady’ (Glamorgan Gazette). Her Red Cross record card does not survive.

Notes: Janet became a teacher but later left to join the Army Pay Corps in Chester. In the summer of 1918 she joined the clerical staff of the QMAAC and was stationed in London. Following a period of indifferent health she was admitted to a London military hospital in April 1919. She died a month later, aged 21.

Notes: Nest and her sister Dorothea were daughters of Margaret Pryse-Rice, President of the Carmarthenshire Red Cross. She served through the whole war, mostly at the Llandovery Auxiliary Hospital but 1918 - 1919 at the Nannau Hospital for Officers, Dolgellau. She died aged 25

Catherine (Katie) Evans

Notes: Katie was the second of seven surviving daughters of Hugh Evans, a marine engineer, and his wife Elizabeth (twin girls died in infancy). Her Red Cross record has not survived, but it is likely that she served at the Holyhead Red Cross Hospital. She died aged 34. On the day after the funeral her sister Pollie Williams [qv] volunteered for the VAD. Many thanks to Aled L Jones and Barry Hillier.

Margaret Evans Thomas

Notes: Margaret, from a Welsh-speaking family, was brought up in Pwllheli from the age of 9 by her aunt and uncle. She probably trained as a nurse in London, perhaps at St Bartholemew’s Hospital which became the 1st London General Hospital. During the war she served as a Staff Nurse there until her death from flu at the age of 28; she was described as ‘cheerful and willing’. The War Office paid her funeral expenses of £20 2s 0d. Her gravestone in Pwllheli cemetery is set with the commemorative plaque (dead man’s penny’) sent to her relations after the war. Her name also appears on the Nurses’ Memorial in St Asaph’s cathedral. Thanks to Wayne Bywater.
