Notes: Gertrude Rosewarne was working as a pupil teacher in 1911. She joined the VAD early in the War, first in Abergavenny and then in Ebbw Vale. She collected entries by many of her patients in her autograph album.

Edith Mary Tonkin

Service: Ward maid, VAD, 1917/11/06 – 1918/10/13

Death: 1918-10-13, 3rd General Hospital Le Treport, Pneumonia / Niwmonia

Memorial: War memorial, Llandaff, Glamorgan

Notes: Edith was born on a farm in Devonshire in 1892. She moved to Cardiff when her father inherited a pub from his uncle. She worked as a ward maid at the 3rd General hospital in Tréport, France, where she died aged 26. Her name appears on Llandaff war memorial with that of her younger brother William John (Jack), who died at the battle of Loos in 1915.

Winifred Owen

Notes: Winifred (born 1888) was a doctor’s daughter. She served in a Cambridge Hospital throughout the war, once sitting next to a hydrotherapy boiler that threatened to explode, to calm the patients. She married a doctor after the war, and never worked again

Daisy Colnett Spickett

Service: Nurse, VAD

Notes: Daisy, a lawyer’s daughter, joined the VAD when it was formed in 1910. She served in hospitals in Wales and England, and on hospital ships. Follow the link for a very interesting interview with Daisy recorded 1974 (IWM). There are 8 reels of tape amounting to about 2 hours of recording.

Service: Nurse, VAD, June 1916 – January 1919 / M

Death: 1919/1/31, Le Havre, Pneumonia / Niwmonia

Memorial: War Memorial, Llanberis, Caernarvonshire

Notes: Jennie Williams came from a comfortably-off family, and joined the VAD in June 1915. She left for France in October 1916, and died of pneumonia following influenza in January 1919, aged 45. She is buried in Ste Marie Cemetery, Le Havre.
